There are actually 3 different locations known as Auschwitz l,ll, and lll. Auschwitz l was the original camp which was the administrative center for the whole complex. This site was suggested as the concentration camp for mainly the Polish prisoners for when German soldiers were invading. This place was a town called Oswiecim before the German soldiers were interested in making it a camp and then renamed it to Auschwitz.
Auschwitz ll known as Auschwitz-Birkenau was a concentration and extermination camp lead by the Nazi Germany during the World War ll. This was known to be the largest of the Nazi concentration camps. This was the first camp in the novel that they were taken to which contained the big furnaces.
Auschwitz lll was also known as Monowitz-Buna which was a sub-camp of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. This camp was built and located in a small part of southern Poland. This was a smaller camp compared to the others which only held 12,000 prisoners and a great majority of them were Jewish.
These camps were mainly operated from May 1940 to January 1945 which mainly contained the Jews, Poles, Roma, and Soviet Soldiers. From the beginning of 1942 to the end of 1944, trains constantly delivered Jews from all over Europe to the Auschwitz gas chambers. After the war, it was testified that up to 3 million people had died there, 2.5 million being gassed and 500,000 from disease and starvation.
Finally after all the suffering, on January 27th,1945, Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet troops and all the remaining prisoners were rescued.
